Behind every enduring brand lies a philosophy that shapes its direction over time. For Intour Maldives, that philosophy has been rooted in knowledge, long-term relationships and a belief that destination expertise still matters.
As Managing Director, Ali Firaq discusses the leadership choices that defined the company, the balance between continuity and change, and why investing in people will ultimately shape the future of the Maldives.
What leadership decision most shaped Intour’s journey?
The defining decision was to prioritise depth over speed. Rather than pursuing rapid expansion, the focus remained on building knowledge, relationships and credibility.
That decision has shaped how Intour is recognised today, not simply as a company operating in the Maldives, but as one that understands it.
How do you balance long-term partnerships with the need to evolve?
The strongest partnerships are those that can evolve honestly. Loyalty matters, but it should also create room for open conversations, innovation and higher standards.
For Intour, the balance lies in respect on one side and progress on the other. Markets change, traveller expectations shift and service must continue to improve. The aim is not to choose between tradition and evolution, but to ensure long-standing partnerships remain relevant, productive and future-facing.
What is the most important shift the Maldives must embrace going forward?
The Maldives must continue moving beyond reliance on natural beauty, focusing instead on long-term value through quality, discipline, differentiation and clear positioning.
The private sector has already demonstrated strong leadership, setting high standards in service, innovation and professionalism. However, sustained success depends on consistency across every part of the visitor experience, including infrastructure, public services and the wider regulatory environment.
Talent also remains a critical factor. The success of the Maldives has long been shaped by people who understand the destination deeply and can present it with credibility and care. I am fortunate to work with a strong team of destination experts, both local and international. Investing in such talent remains essential. If the Maldives is to sustain its position at the pinnacle of global luxury tourism, developing and retaining skilled professionals must become a shared priority.

The Maldives will always be defined by its beauty, but its lasting success will depend on how that beauty is understood, protected and presented to the world. For Intour Maldives, the work has always existed in that space between knowledge and experience, between local understanding and global expectation.
As the destination continues to evolve, its role is not only to connect travellers to the Maldives, but to help preserve the integrity of how the Maldives is experienced.
Quietly, consistently and with a long view, Intour Maldives continues to shape the journey.
