At the ultra-luxury Velaa Private Island in the Maldives’ Noonu Atoll, the Ocean Pool House has been thoughtfully reimagined, unveiling a new chapter in contemporary coastal living. The upgraded residence blends architecture, bespoke furnishings, and artisanal detailing to create an atmosphere that is both relaxed and refined, a destination designed for effortless luxury above the lagoon.

At the helm of the architectural refinement is Joy Alexandre Harb, principal architect and founder of JYH International Architects. Known for a contextual, human-centred philosophy, Harb’s vision enhances the residence’s relationship with light, water, and flow. The reconfiguration prioritizes clarity and spatial balance, allowing the Indian Ocean to remain the dominant presence while the interiors respond with restraint.

The interior direction, led by Eva Szumilas, introduces a refined material language through furniture that is both sculptural and inviting. Proportion and tactility guide each selection, ensuring the pieces feel intentional rather than ornamental. The result is an atmosphere that feels composed yet effortless.

Layered into the space is a curated selection of atypical furniture supplied by L’ATELIER under the direction of Aziz Moussawer. Known for sourcing conversation-driven designs, the studio adds expressive character without disrupting the architectural calm. Among the standout pieces is the Litho chair by Pierre Frey, a bold yet timeless statement that anchors the interior with confident craftsmanship.

Underfoot, bespoke carpets by BM HOME, created in collaboration with Elif Paşalıoğlu Demirtaş, introduce warmth and subtle texture. These custom elements soften the geometry of the space, grounding the overwater setting in comfort and cohesion.

Together, the collaborations result in an Ocean Pool House that feels less renovated and more redefined. The upgrade is not about embellishment, but about alignment—architecture, design, and materiality converging to heighten the sensory experience of living above the water.

Designed originally by Czech architect Petr Kolar as an elegant fusion of Maldivian culture and contemporary expression, Velaa Private Island comprises 47 private villas, houses, and residences, 18 of which extend over the lagoon. From above, the island’s layout subtly mirrors the form of a turtle, a nod to the meaning of “Velaa” in the local language and to the generations of sea turtles that nest along its shores.

With the unveiling of the reimagined Ocean Pool House, Velaa refines its overwater vision, quietly, confidently, and with an unwavering focus on craftsmanship.
